Chamber Director Position Description

Iola Area Chamber of Commerce

Scope of Position:

-Takes a hands-on approach to recruitment and membership retention – actively works with local businesses and members to add value through advertising, social media, education and networking.

-Actively seeks ways to improve and increase tourism to make the Iola Area a destination.

-Has the ability to meet deadlines, organize events and communicate effectively.

-Has a positive can-do attitude with a heart and passion to serve the community. Takes pride in helping the community and businesses succeed.


Business Plan

-Guides the development of the Chamber’s goals and business plan within the framework adopted by the Board of Directors.

-Arranges Chamber and public meetings, prepares agendas, notices and reports.

-Gathers data and materials for use by the Board and ensures that minutes are taken at all meetings.

-Reviews proposals and projects to present to the Board of Directors.


-Responsible for management of the Chamber’s finances; prepares the annual budget for the boar’s approval; develops general plans for meting the budget.

-Approves all specific expenditures approved by the Board.

-Provides financial information to the Chamber’s accountant in order to process all financial records, balances bank statements, authorizes payment of all bills and submits monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors.


-Responsible for membership recruitment, retention and development through on-site visits, correspondence through various forms of communication and act as a liaison between members, potential members and the Board of Directors.

-Manages current memberships and handles correspondence to members regarding membership status including billing members for annual membership dues and other membership information.

-Maintains membership and prospect files and prepare membership and recruitment reports for the Board of Directors.

Member and Public Relations

-Responsible for preparing, disseminating and maintaining a high level of open communications to the membership and the general public.

-Serves as a liaison between the Chamber and all groups in the community, serves as a contact between organizations and the media, and advises the Board regarding developments affecting the business community.

-Directs the preparation of official publications of the Chamber such as brochures, information packets, bulletins, newsletters, news releases and all other publications to provide information to the public.

-Represents the Chamber of Commerce at meetings of other organizations; appears before City Councils and other governmental bodies as needed; makes public addresses and secures other speakers concerning community and Chamber activities.

Community Events and Tourism

-Organizes and creates projects and events for the Chamber throughout the Iola Area.

-Assists with the coordination and success of community events including.

-Promotes the Iola Area throughout the state and region.

Supervisory Responsibility

-Supervises the Chamber’s part-time administrative assistant under the direction of the Board of Directors.

-Responsible for recruiting, training and organizing 10-20 volunteers to assist with various projects and events.

Communication Skills

-Strong written and oral communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Board of Directors, community businesses and the general public.

-Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

Computer Skills

-Competent and proficient understanding of web-based and social media platforms. Technically competent with various software programs, such as QuickBooks, Publisher, Office Suites, Word, Excel and Outlook.

-Must be able to learn, understand and apply new technologies.

Work Environment

-This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.

Physical Demands

-The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to employ verbal communication and listening skills. The employee frequently is required to stand, sit, walk, and handle, reach and lift up to 25 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

-Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand with flextime available as needed.


-Travel is primarily local during the business day, although limited out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
